Car insurance
made simple
From the compulsory CTP Green Slip to comprehensive cover — understanding your car insurance options in Australia, state by state.
The 4 types of car insurance in Australia
Mandatory
CTP Green Slip — legally required to register your vehicle in all states
Optional
Comprehensive — your car plus others' property
Optional
Third Party Property — others' property, not your car
Optional
Third Party Fire & Theft — TPPD plus fire/theft of your car
Understanding CTP Insurance
Compulsory Third Party insurance is mandatory to register a vehicle in Australia. It covers compensation for people injured in accidents involving your vehicle — but does NOT cover vehicle or property damage.
🆘What CTP covers
Personal injury claims from people injured or killed in accidents caused by your vehicle — other drivers, passengers, pedestrians and cyclists. Medical expenses, lost income and rehabilitation costs for injured parties.
🚫What CTP does NOT cover
CTP does not cover damage to vehicles, property or objects. It also generally does not cover the at-fault driver's own injuries in some states. You need separate comprehensive or third party cover for property damage.
🗺️State-by-state CTP
NSW: private insurers (iCare, NRMA, GIO, Allianz, QBE, AAMI). VIC: TAC (government monopoly). QLD: private insurers. SA, WA, TAS, ACT, NT: various state schemes. Cost and process differs significantly by state.
Optional car cover types
🛡️Comprehensive
The most complete cover — your vehicle for accidental damage, fire, theft and natural events, PLUS damage you cause to others. Typically includes roadside assistance, hire car and new-for-old on new cars.
🔸Third Party Property
Covers damage you cause to others' vehicles and property (up to $20M typically). Does NOT cover your own car. Good option if your car is older and not worth the comprehensive premium.
🔹Third Party Fire & Theft
All Third Party Property inclusions, plus your car if stolen or damaged by fire. A middle-ground option between comprehensive and basic third party cover.
